Empowering Independent Living
At NLMHA, we understand that every resident’s needs are unique. That’s why we’re committed to making adaptations to our homes, helping our tenants live as independently as possible in their own spaces.
Minor Aids and Adaptations
We can arrange for minor adaptations quickly and efficiently. If you’re a social tenant, you can request these changes directly, or they can be referred by a family member, care and support worker, or your GP. Examples of minor adaptations include:
– Grab rails for enhanced safety.
– Stair bannisters or handrails.
– Lever-style taps for easier use.
Major Aids and Adaptations
Requests for major adaptations need to be made through your local authority’s Social Services Occupational Therapy Team. While structural alterations like through-floor lifts or extensions are not included, the adaptations we accommodate usually involve:
– Wet rooms for better accessibility.
– Ramped access to support mobility.
– Stairlifts for navigating multiple levels.
– Hoists for ease of movement.
– Wheelchair-friendly kitchens.
Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) for Major Adaptations
You may be eligible for financial assistance to cover the cost of major adaptations through a means-tested Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG), available from your local authority. If approved, adaptations will be carried out following the occupational therapist’s recommendations.
This approach reflects our dedication to supporting independence while ensuring safety and accessibility in every home.
